CYCLIST KILLED
MOTORIST ON TRIAL ACCIDENT NEAR WESTFIELD The death of a cyclist on the Great South Road near Westfield on the evening ot December 12 had a seq-uel in the Supreme Court this morning when Cyril Sydney Clarke, aged 18, driver of a motorcar, stood his trial on a charge of negligently drßvmg so as to cause the death of Hugh Alexander Cammock, Mr. E. H". Norther oft and Mr. L. P. Leary defended prisoner. Outlining the Crown’s case, Mr. V. R. Meredith said accused and his father were .driving from Auckland to their farm at Maramarua, about 45 miles from the city,- leaving town about 9 p.m! Near the stone crusher at Westfield the car collided with the cyclist, Who had a light burning and was coming’ iri the direction of the city. He was killed outright. The suggestion was, said counsel, that accused was driving at an excessive speed in order to get home. Next day the police had picked up a piece of brain matter 172 feet from where the car had pulled up. Skid marks continued for 103 feet. In evidence. Ernest Henry Clarke, farmer, and father of accused. said that the car was travelling at not more than 28 miles an hour at the time of the collision. It was on its right side. He noticed the cyclist coming toward the car. JJe was also on his correct side until he had come within seven or eight yards of the car. He then swerved across the road and it was then too late to avoid him. (Proceeding.)
