Te Aroha's Big Opening Day
SATURDAY'S CONTESTS GOOD QUALITY FIELDS The stage is well set for the opening on Saturday of the annual meeting of the Te Aroha Jockey Club, at the course at Herriesville. An excellent programme is to be got off on the tirst day, and with no dearth of horses there is certain to be good fields on the second day, Monday. The new portion of the course has been thoroughly consolidated, for this was completed prior to the last meeting, and will be in use for the tirst time on Saturday. In the event of this fixture being a success—and what is there to prevent the club hoisting new figures?—the further plans in the scheme of improvements to make the racing track second to none will be undertaken. Certainly this progressive club is leaving nothing undone to enhance its reputation. There will be no dearth of runners on Saturday. The field in the Herries Memorial Cup Handicap is rich in quality, and will be sure to provide a stirring contest, even better than the thrilling contest furnished last year. There is class in the sprint, too. and the Hack Cup has all the best of this class engaged.
Xo less than 29 accepted for in the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap, and if they all start the sweepstake conditions will raise the prize to the substantial figure of £ 345. However, it is expected that the number of runners will be reduced to about 24. In any case there will be no division, for the track at the barrier at the six is 110 feet, and this would permit 31 horses to safely line up. The acceptances tor Saturday’s sport are as follow:
Deserves a Win Now that Don Zolock has mended his wilful ways he should render his connections better service. At Hamilton he had the honour of being the only one in the opening trot to go square all the way' and then only got second. If he does it again he should win. Old General The old general. Lord R.oberts. was generally thought to be pensioned off, but it is evident he is on the -warpath again. In these days of supposed flying machines the old chap max' find it hard to keep pace with the forces. Well-conditioned One Billy Carbine has not been a lucky trotter, but latterly he is going well
enough- in his work to say the tide of fortune may soon turn. The son of El Carbine does not misfire now, but: he is on a mark where he cannot take any flying shots. Getting More Solid Tot Logan made some amends for repeated failures by winning a double at the recent Nelson fixture, and the Logan Pointer mare is becoming more; solid, although she may require a bit more age before she wins in better company. A Likely Sort Dipnoi is a seven-year-old gelding by Ballin from a Glenoglo mare that was only raced twice last season, his first start resulting in a dead heat with Rebecca at in a 12 5-furlong heat. At Ashburton last Boxing DayDipnoi beat a pretty useful field over two miles in 4.56. May Do Better Roez has a nice turn of speed when she is at the proper gait, but the sister to Gold Sovereign has a tendency to leave her feet for the least provocation. She may be of a less excitable nature now and if so should do much better.
