AWAPUNI NOTES
PENEUS AS 'CHASER SCHOOLING AND GALLOPS (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. At Awapuni yesterday morning Red Fuchsia (A. McDonald) and Hillation (Bromley), two of Mrs. McDonald’s (nee Miss G. Maher) team of jumpers, went off at the four-furlong post to run the last three in 41. Red Fuchsia will enter upon his training over the battens next week. Peneus, who is destined for the big country this season, ran six furlongs with A. McDonald up in 1.24 1-5. Roburant, who will be a runner in the hurdles at Wanganui, left six furlongs behind in 1.20 3-5. The Absurd gelding had W. Taylor, a light-weight, in the saddle. Wilderness (Stokes) gave an attractive display when jumping three fences the reverse way. The Signor gelding prefers the rail on his near side, otherwise he is inclined to run out. If he held up he would be a distinct possibility for a hurdle race, but bleeding troubles have repeatedly intervened. Hymestrason, who boasted an en - larged leg after Foxton, is back in work, looking all the better for the spell. Trainer R. E. Hatch worked him in company with the chaser Askari, who is not being hurried. Lin Arlington, who will contest the hurdle event on the second day at Wanganui, picked up Kilorell at the six-furlong post, the pair sprinting home over the last two furlongs. Both have improved considerably of late. Awapuni stables furnish 20 nominations for the opening day of the Dannevirke meeting, this centre being represented in every event. Novar and Peneus figure in the high-weight, a jumping event not being included in the programme either day. One For Dannevirke Cup Locarno (a stable companion of Peneus), who scored over the battens at Ashhurst, lias been accorded a nomination for the Dannevirke Cup, the Elysian gelding being the sole local representative, which is, to say the least, somewhat surprising. Lucretia and Tenure will make their debut under silk in the Maiden Plate at Dannevirke. The former has a stable companion in Vaucluse also figuring therein, the Valkyrian gelding having come in for strong support on the second day at Hawera without actually flattering his supporters. Narani. the full-sister to Valuator (Rangitero—Heather), who was sold some little time back to a Canterbury sportsman, was given her first outing under silk at Paliiatua. when she looked rather on the big side. The experience should do her good. The aforementioned Tenure (Acre —Merotello), may likewise require a race or two before she produces her full speed, of which she has command of quite a fair turn. Desert Lad. who lost form at the time of the New Zealand Cup meeting. had one race following his return from Riccarton—in the Westbury Handicap on the final day of the Manawatu meeting—prior to his being accorded a let-up. He has come back into the active ranks, and while he has been nominated for Dannevirke, he may be the better for a race. Tlie Tahoraite Hack Handicap at Dannevirke finds Hillation down to make his first appearance under silk for a long time past. The Provocation—Hill Lass gelding is a fine bold type, and it was exceedingly unfortunate for his lady mentor. Mrs. Alan McDonald, that he injured himself when jumping in private in Hawke’s Bay. In the 1925-26 season Hillation won five times, ran second twice, and filled third berth the same number of times, in events on the fiat as well as over the fences. Archeria. the Archery-Rosellate gelding from G. Jones’s stable, proved an expensive proposition to backers at Paliiatua. This three-year-old's dam - s a full-sister to the well performed Roseday, but Aroheria -did not appear u> hang on too well over a mile and 110 yards, and he will probal.lv be better suited by a shorter distance, lie. has been nominated for a sevenfurlong event at Dannevirke.
TOAD'S HOPE will not be a competitor on the first day of the Otahuhu meeting, his connections expressing dissatisfaction with the handicap allotted the Australianbred pacer in the Tamaki Handicap, in which he is set to give several opponents, who have gone better than 3.30 for 12 furlongs, 24 yards start. Dad’s Hope was not eligible for the improvers’ races at the Auckland Christmas carnival as he could not comply with the regulation—for horses that have done 2.20 to the mile or better. In the Tamaki Handicap Dad’s Hope is placed on approximately a 2.18 to the mile peg.
