SHORTAGE IN RATES

WAIHI HOSPITAL BOARD’S DIFFICULTY DISTRICT TOO SMALL (Special to THE SUNJ WAIHI, Wednesday. The Waihi Borough Council, which has to contribute large sums to the Hospital Board to enable it to carry on, is beginning to protest, suggesting that the hospital district should be widened in order to provide additional rates. At present the rating area is confined 'to the borough boundaries, and while the council was receiving £20.000 a year from gold duty, the necessary contributions were willingly paid. Now, however, that the revenue has fallen to about £6,000, the council is beginning to demur. The settlers in the Waikino, Waitekauri and Waihi Plains ridings are willing that their districts should be included in the Hospital Board’s rating area, provided that the rates are not materially increased. It is probable that a petition will be circulated for this purpose.
