£SOO SUBSIDY SOUGHT

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF IN MOUNT ALBERT BOROUGH COUNCiL MEETS The Government is to be asked to grant the Mount Albert Borough the sum of £SOO as a subsidy, on a £1 for £1 basis, for carrying out unemployment relief works. This was carried at last evening’s meeting of the council. A deputation of Jesraond Street residents complained of the bad state of repair of the street. Their request for repair work was referred to the joint committee for inspection and report. A resolution of sympathy for the widow and family of Mr. L. Dodds, formerly building inspector, was passed. Mr. W. E. Begbie was reappointed act-ing-engineer for six months, and an increase in his salary was granted. Several councillors made it clear that there was a strong feeling in the borough that the Transport Board should have agreed to the Mount Albert-Avon-dale tramway extension. Cr. Langley said that ratepayers, although in favour of sanctioning the board’s loan suggestions, had no confidence in the members of that body, who to a large extent were those who had administered transport matters when the City Council controlled the trams and buses. During the last three weeks 24 building permits valued at £9,058 were granted. „
