FLAMES ENVELOPE MEN

SYDNEY GAS ACCIDENT

FIVE PERSONS INJURED SYDNEY, Monday. Five men were injured while they were working on a gas main at Rose Bay through a spark struck from a pick igniting the gas. The men were engaged at the time in taking up a road which had been undermined by storm-water. The two men who were most seriously injured were William Jones and Herbert Holmes. They were employees of the Sydney Gas Company. In an endeavour to trace a leak from the main under the road the party was suddenly enveloped in flames. All the men staggered out of the hole in the road more or less burned. The flames continued to blaze for two hours, when a fire brigade suppressed them. The task of the firemen was difficult as explosions occurred frequently underground and choking fumes were emitted. This made approach to the fire dangerous.
