CONVERTING A CAR
COURT TAKES LENIENT VIEW (From Our Own Correspondent) PAEROA, Monday. At the Police Court this morning, John Walter Bennett Casey and William Miller were charged with converting a motor-car to their own use while under the influence of liquor, and also with stealing a quantity of benzine. The case arose out of a recent fire at Mackay, when a benzine shed was destroyed and a lorry extensively damaged. The charge of driving while intoxicated was dismissed. On the other charges of converting and theft of benzine defendants were convicted and discharged. The Bench took a lenient view in the case of Casey, stating that he had lost his employment and had already suffered in other ways, besides being severely burned by the fire. On that account his licence would not be endorsed.
