PRIVATE BUS SERVICE
MOUNT EDEN MAYOR’S INTENTIONS
UNEMPLOYMENT SUBSIDY “For all these large areas outside the tramway system it is my intention to support private bus enterprise,” said Mr. E. H. Potter, Mayor of Mount Eden, at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council. This statement was in answer to an appeal from Cr. Morris, who asked for an increased bus service at the Mount Eden and Dominion Road tram termini. The council had already written to the Transport board on this subject and a letter was received last evening, saying that the council’s letter had been referred to a committee of the whole board.
“Hear! Hear!” was heard from several councillors, when -a letter from the Public Works Department was read saying that the subsidy for unemployment relief in the borough had been raised to £I,OOO. The Mayor moved that a letter be sent to the Prime Minister acknowledging the prompt reply to the council’s request. According to the building inspector’s report permits for works totalling £11,142 in value had been granted during the month. The fire brigade reported that three calls had been answered since January 16.
Notification was received from the Main Highways Board that £469 11s 6d had been allocated to the council for petrol tax to December 31, 1928.
