GREAT SOUTH ROAD
INSPECTION BY A.A.A. OFFICIALS
Two officials of the A.A.A. (the touring manager, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup. and Mr. H. Butcher, chairman of the Service Committee) have recently completed an inspection tour of the South Auckland roads and have reported as follows: “On Tuesday afternoon w? left Auckland and passing through Rangiriri interviewed the Public Works engineers in charge of the various works from Mercer to Hamilton. Satisfactory progress x’epoi’ts were received, but unfortunately delay was reported owing to metal barges havingbeen stranded on the sandbank in the river. The maintenance immediately south of Rangiriri has also suffered in consequence of the delay in the delivery of this metal. “The tar-sealing under the control of the Public Works Department is veil toward the northern end of ihe stretch at Ohinewai and the Huntly Town Board now has only about a quarter of a mile to complete on its northern boundary. The road then has about one and three-quarter miles on the southern side of the township to complete the whole stretch. “The usual conditions prevail on other portions of the Great South Road and the dust menace between Ngaruawahia. and Hamilton still presents a real danger to the motorist especially when there is heavy traffic. “We inspected the new road which is being formed between Otorolianga and the Waitomo Caves Road. This branches off the Waitomo Caves Road opposite the Te Kuiti Flat Road and when completed it will reduce the dis.tance by 23; miles. Two and a-half miles of this road have been formed and the steepest grade is 1 in 20 and there is no corner which does not provide ample visibility.”
