RAPINE’S TRIAL
GOOD TEN FURLONGS PREPARATION FOR WANGANUI CUP (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Monday. Weather conditions were again ideal for training operations on the Wanganui tracks this morning, and the going on number one grass was in excellent order and fast. As J. H. Jefferd’s team of three Rapine, Joy King and Knightlike—are the only visitors here as yet there was not much doing. Rapine was again set a solid task, being asked to travel a mile and aquarter, and over the final seven furlongs he had Joy King as a companion. M. Gilmore rode the Cup candidate, and T. Bound was on Joy King. Rapine was going at top when the watches were set going, for his rider had set off nearly a furlong before the post, so it was not surprising to find that the initial quarter had been cut out in 25 3-5, and the half mile in 52 1-5. Going on strongly with his task Rapine reached the six furlongs in 1.18 1-5, while the time occupied for the mile was 1.44 1-5. There was nothnig wrong with the aged son of Martian and Pineta when he reached the end of the journey in 2.11, which time may be considered eminently satisfactory in view of the fact that it has seldom been bettered. Mask has several times covered the distance in 2.12, however. In addition to Rapine’s performance it may be added that Joy King went very well indeed. After breakfast Star Area was sent seven furlongs by himself, taking 1 31 3-5 for the distance. The first three furlongs occupied 39 3-5 and the five took 1.4 2-5. Star Area, who was ridden by a light-weight finished well, and appears to be in good nick for his Stewards’ Handicap engagement. The following horses arrived by the noon train from New Plymouth: Gascony, Cimabue, Atareria. Home Made, Vexatious, Keddar, Hynanna, Miss Ransom. Passing through Aramoho on the way home to Featherston were Vei'tigern and Banket, while Gold j Cure was on the same train for Feild--1 ing*
£585 he was third fancy, betterbacked ones being Mervette £1,160, and Queen Arch £612, while the second horse, Schorr, carried tickets to the extent of £277. When the field had settled down Macroom was showing the way to Schorr, Mervette. Mosque, Boomerday ana Queen Arch, and going down the back the first-men-tioned had a slight call over Schorr, who was just in front of Queen Arch and Mosque, with Mervette and Boomerday on terms further back. Two and a-half furlongs from home Macroom, Schorr and Mosque had little separating them, and as they neared the turn Mervette joined them, this quartette swinging round the home bend two lengths ahead of Queen Arch and Boomerday, who were together. Mosque did best in the run home and beat Schorr by three-quarters of a length, with Queen Arch, who finished strongly, a similar distance away in third place. Mervette was fourth, followed by Boomerday and Macroom. Rennie Handicap
Only four paraded for the Rennie Handicap, most money being found for The Thorn £844, High Tide £540, and Lucy Rose £4ll. The lastnamed got all the best of the start and going out of the straight had a two lengths’ advantage over The Thorn, Red Day and High Tide being on terms together. At the five furlongs The Thorn assumed the lead from Lucy Rose, with High Tide next and Red Day well back. Lucy Rose headed The Thorn on the turn and was the first to enter the straight. Doing it well all the way to the post Lucy Rose won nicely by a length and a-half, The Thorn being a similar
