REGISTERED PACKAGES MISSING

FORTY BAGS OPENED Press Associa $ n WELLINGTON, To-day. The Secretary-general of the Post Office advises that some mails received from the South Island by the Wahine yesterday morning were found, on discharge from the vessel, to have been pillaged. Approximately 40 bags were opened and a portion of the registered contents abstracted from them. Full details of the losses are not yet available, but it is known that the registered contents of bags from various parts of the South Islarld have been stolen. There is no suggestion that non-registered letters have been interfered with.
