FLORAL CULTURE

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY HAS GOOD YEAR

FIRM FINANCIAL FOOTING The Auckland Horticultural Society is now on a firm footing financially, according to the report of the executive presented at the annual meeting last evening. This was attributed to the economical policy that had been pursued throughout last financial year, to the increasing attendance at shows, and to reduction of hall-hire expenses. It is the opinion of the committee that the most significant indication of the growth of interest in floral culture in Auckland is the fact that those clubs formed two years ago for the purpose of exploiting particular flowers are still extremely active, and that another such club was formed recently. The annual report expressed the society’s appreciation of the address given by Dr. Hill, Director of the Royal Gardens, Kew, England, who was in Auckland a short time ago. A cup offered by the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture has been allotted to garden-grown New Zealand plants cultivated by amateur growers. The meeting decided in favour of a women’s committee of twelve to work in conjunction with the executive committee.

On the motion of Mr. Wernham it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the parent body, the Royal Horticultural Society, on the death of its late president, Lord Lambourne. After many eulogistic remarks from members special votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. Wernham and Wright, and Sergeant Rock was elected a life-member.

At the conclusion of the meeting members spent some time inspecting a display of dahlias. The following officers were elected: Patron, the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson; vice-patron, Mr. G. Baildon; president, Sir Edwin Mitchelson; vice-presidents, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Messrs. M. T. Goldie, W. W. Bruce, D. A. Hay, E. Yates, N. A. Duthie, C. V. Houghton, H. B. J. Bulol, N. Brett; members of executive committee, Messrs. W. Dale, G. Hunt, E. Stewart, A. H. Finer, J. R. Crosbv, S. Wiltshire, R. K. Gilliam. J. K. Ross, F. G. Blackwell, C. Edwards: women’s committee, Miss Newbegin, Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. Hart; secretary. Mr. R. J. Thornton. Mr. H. T. Goddie was chairman.
