DEADLY CROSSINGS
RAILWAY DEPARTMENT TO INVESTIGATE
SETTING UP COMMITTEE (Special to THE SUNJ WELLINGTON, To-day. An important move to be made by the Railway Department at an early date is the appointment of a committee to consider the whole question of levelcrossings in the Dominion. It is understood that the personnel of the committee is already arranged and that the approval of the Minister of Railways, tho 1 Con. W. B. Taverner, will be asked shortly. Representation of motorists upon the committee lias been arranged.
Railway crossing warnings, the respective claims of different crossings lor equipment with warning signals, methods of reducing danger and kindred matters will be looked into. It is possible that the committee will draw up a programme of action for a stipulated period. At present there are many level-crossings in the Dominion which need attention and a stated sum is placed upon the Railway Department’s estimates for installation of warning signals each year. Last year six such crossings were fitted with different devices. The difficulty confronting the department at present is that expert labour is needed for the erection of wigwags and bells and that a great deal of it is not available.
