CONSTERNATION CAUSED
PRINCE’S STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT MINERS MR. BALDWIN INTERVIEWED (United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.14 p.m. LONDON, Wed. The Prince of Wales spent half an hour at the House of Commons to-day, giving the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, his impressions of his tour of the mining areas in the North. According to the “Daily Herald,” following his interview with Mr. Baldwin, the Prince decided not to visit the South Wales coalfields. A detailed report as a result of the Prince’s visit to Northumberland and Durham has been prepared for publication. It has not yet been published, however, and may never be published. Copies of the report have gone to the departments concerned. The contents proved most unpalatable to the Government. Revelations arising from the Prince’s tour have caused consternation among the mine-owners with whom the Prince is at present unpopular. Even before the Prince of Wales returned to London a regular newspaper barrage was started with a view to discounting as far as possible the condition of the miners, which the Prince’s tour put under the searchlight. —i' Ministry of Labour’s official figures show that 213,000 miners are unemployed. What the Prince of Wales says can lie duplicated many times in every coalfield. No suppression or whitewash can alter that.
