£200,000 Fire
DISASTER IN N.S.W. TOWN Forty Business Premises Destroyed (United. P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, To day. A MESSAGE from Cooiiamble, about 300 miles by rail north-west of Sydney, states that in one of the most disastrous fires that Western New South Wales has known, 36 stores, two banks, and two hotels in the main street of Coonamble were gutted.
JpANNED by a fierce wind, the fire was still raging at a late hour last night. Every available person was engaged in carrying sick people from their beds in the threatened houses, chopping down premises to make fire breaks, and carrying water. It is impossible to estimate the damage with any degree of accuracy, but
it is thought that it will amount to at least £200,000. Owing to the strong wind, the firemen were powerless to subdue the flames, so they concentrated on preventing the fire spreading. A fortunate change in the wind saved the adjoining blocks from destruction.
