LANDING CATTLE
USE OF CITY WHARVES SUGGESTED
A suggestion that cattle should be landed at the city wharves again, and the cattle wharf at Or.ikei be demolished, was made by the engineer to the Auckland Ha-bour Board yesterday, but it did not find approval. The Northern Steamship Company wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Orakei Wharf .and stating that recently a member of the « rew of the s.s. Apanui had fallen through a hole in the decking into the water, but had not been injured. The board's engineer reported that the hole through which the man fell was actually on the passenger portion of the wharf, which was closed. He recommended that the board, in view of the dwindling revenue obtained from cattle and the high cost of maintenance. to consider the question of reverting to the old method of landing cattle at the main city wharves and demolishing the cattle wharf. The board was also asked to consider the question of pulling down the St. Heliers and Kohimarama wharves. The chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie: Tiie City Council would not take the landing of cattle at the city wharves too kindly. Mr. G. R. Hutchinson: The engineer has not looked far enough. The Hon. E. W. Alison said that he • lid not agree with the suggestion. The • ity had advanced tremendously since • attle were landed there, and a reversion would mean danger. "They land most of the cattle up the Tamaki.” said Mr. W. F. McCallum. The question was referred to the hoard In committee.
