“LOYALTY” TO BOARD
HARBOUR MEMBER CHALLENGED
MR. HISLOP’S OPINIONS Challenged at yesterday’s meeting as to the propriety of discussing the actions of the Harbour Hoard outside the board room. Mr. J. Hislop replied: “I will discuss the policy of this board as it relates to North Shore as fully as I think fit!'* * The question was raised by Mr. E. W. Inder, who asked Mr. Hislop if In* had been correct ly reported in the newspapers as the mover of a motion at a meeting of the Marine Boroughs’ Association, wherein disapproval was expressed of the increase made by the board in the charges to the Devonport .Steam Ferry Company. 'lf Mr. Hislop was correctly reported, I want to ask him whether he thinks his attitude was a proper one for a member of the board to take up,” said Mr. Inder. Mr. Hislop denied that he had advanced the motion. He might have seconded it, but he did not remember. In any case, he claimed, he had acted within his rights. “Am I bound not to express an opinion?” asked Mr. Hislop. A Member: A sense of loyalty to the board should have restrained you. “A member certainly has the right to discuss board matters outside, but lie lias no right to misrepresent the hoard,” said the chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie. Mr. Campbell Johnstone said that Mr. Hislop had taken a strong stand ■ n the question when it had been before the board. "It is all right so long as he says correctly what took place.” "And does not make out he represents the board’s views," added another member. "Oh, I do not pretend to represent the board’s views." said Mr. Hislop.
