Batey, Labour M.P. for Durham, asked what steps it was proposed to take to deal with the poverty and distress recently revealed at Durham and in Northumberland. Mr. Baldwin: The steps were explained by Mr. Churchill on December 17. Mr. Batey: Are we to understand that poverty which has staggered the country has not impressed the Government? Cries of “Order,” and “Unfair” followed his remark. Mr. Baldwin did not reply. Mr. E. Shinwell, Labour M. P. for Linlithgow: Isn’t it clear that those steps were inadequate? Mr. Baldwin: That’s another question. • As a matter of fact unemployment in those districts is falling.
