HIKURANGI COAL MINES FLOODED
200 OUT OF WORK
VALUABLE MACHINERY SUBMERGED
The Hikurangi coal mines have been flooded, and are at present out of action, over 200 men being idle. Reports are conflicting as to the probabalities, one report stating that the mine may not be workable again, while the managemen tanticipates that the mine w ill be in operation within a short period. A Press Association message from Whangarei this morning stated: “A report from Hikurangi states that a very serious development occurred at the Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine following last week's inrush of water. Hhe water is now said to have obtained a height of 60ft. submerging machinery valued at <£ 10,000, which may become a total loss. Apparently an underground stream of considerable volume has broken through, and fears are expressed that the mine may be unworkable permanently.” ________
