NEW LYNN SPORTS
CLUB’S SPLENDID PROGRESS SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING Progressive suburban and country [ centres have given a new lease of life j to amateur athletics in Auckland. Fol- ; lowing on the splendid sports carnival ; at Te Awamutu last week, many city j athletes visited New Lynn on Satur- j day, the meeting assuming added importance in view of the Auckland track, field and cycling championships at the Domain on February 16. Since its first meeting last season, the Lynndale Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club has made splendid progress, the district being fortunate in possessing keenly alert and enthusiastic men who have interested themselves wholeheartedly in the foot racing and cycling sport. Saturday’s successful sports carnival provided an interesting reflex of their hard work and enthusiasm. and Messrs W. Vallance, sen., and E. Stacey (president and secretary respectively) were freely congratulated on the success of the meeting, and the fine work the club is doing in the in- j terests of amateur athletics. MEREDITH WINS HUNDRED In the running events, Mr. A. R. Eliott, handicapper and starter, had the pleasure of sending off fully representative fields to excellent starts and, in the sprints particularly close and strongly-fought finishes. The open hundred was a magnificent race, Meredith (4yds) defeating the champion, Elliott. by the narrowest of narrow margins in the real “blanket” finish. The honours of the race were certainly with Elliott, who is at present racing at the top of his form, although Meredith put up a splendid performance, and later on ran a great second to Willey in the furlong. Henry, the Auckland title-, holders, was always in command in the “four-forty,” and Savidan showed a fine turn of speed in winning the half. In the mile, however, the New Zealand champion had to be content with i second place to J. Crum, who followed |up liis success at Te Awamutu by I scoring a popular win on his home I ground. SPECTACULAR CYCLING The cycle racing was spectacular and thrilling, and the riding of a sound standard, although in the course of the day there were several spills, particularly at the sharp turn into the straight. In the three mile handicap, the last time round, a bunched field set a ter# rific pace over the last lap. and five riders came to grief at the last turn. C. Clarke was first to fall, and four other riders, Whitehouse, Cleaver, Aldred and Harris, piled up into a tangled heap, Whitehouse somersaulting into the wire fence surrounding the track. Although more than one rider was badly shaken, fortunately there were no serious injuries, and Cleaver himself remounted and pedalled in for third place. Taylor and McElroy having the track to themselves at the finish. L. B. Roberts showed splendid form in winning both the mile and twomile cycling handicaps.
