ENORMOUS DAMAGE
FIRES RAGE IN N.S.W. TWELVE MILES OF FLAMES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 10.40 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Huge losses of stock are expected at Garrundah, a district near Goulburn, where the bush fires are travelling fast and with a terifying roar through a wide expanse of grass land, burning crops, barns and fences. Hundreds of men are striving to hold the fire on a 12-mile front. Enormous damage has already been done, one owner losing £6,000 worth of fencing. Many sheep have been burned to death. At Bathurst one mob of several hundreds was overwhelmed by the flames, while an attempt was being made to rescue them. Fires are also reported from the Lithgow, Cessnock, Coolah, Katoomba and Carcoar districts. DRY JANUARY RECORD FOR 70 YEARS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.24 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The Weather Bureau rainfall figures for the State show that January was the driest month on record for 70 years. • Sydney recorded 32 points compared with its average of 3.67 inches. Less than five inches have fallen since June last.
