ALL ROADS GOOD

TOURING CONDITIONS A.A.A. WEEKLY REPORT The Auckland Automobile Association advises that road conditions ii e favourable on practically all of the clay routes. In areas where the operations of the Main Highways Board are transforming country tracks into modern highways, a certain amount of inconvenience is being caused through the diversion of traffic on to side detours. ‘ These, liowever, are temporary, pending the completion of the highway. The continuation of fine -weather has enabled the local bodies to do effective work, and where rough clay conditions caused uncomfortable travelling during the holidays, most of these surfaces have now been graded ot* ground down. On the metalled roads, extensive maintenance has been carried out, but the lack of rain has caused deterioration, as there has been nothing to bind the surfaces. On Wednesday, rain fell in the central part of the island, but the roads were not affected. If the present weather continues, motorists may with safety travel on all the main routes. The following routes should be avoided in the event of wet weather: Auckland to Whangarei, via the East Coast; the Wellsford to Maungaturoto section of the West Coast route; Whangarei to Kawakawa, via Hikurangi; Waihi to Tauranga; Te Kuiti to Taumarunui; Wanganui to Raetihi; Tokaanu to Waiouru (direct); Piopio-Ohura-Stratford. AUCKLAND TO HAMILTON Motorists travelling between Auckland and Hamilton have expressed dissatisfaction at the condition of some of the detour routes provided where the main road is being tar-sealed. These detours, however, are only being used for a short time, and as the tarsealing progresses the detours are closed, and traffic returned to the main road. Within 10 days the northern section of the Huntly Town Board area should be finished, and the last small deviation will be discontinued. Between Ohinewai and Mercer various detours will be opened from time to time, as the permanent surfacing progresses, but although traffic may be diverted on to the clay road, no trouble will be experienced in wet weather, for the Public Works Department has given assurances to the A.A.A. that the main road will be open to traffic if the detour routes become wet.
