FRANKLIN’S NEEDS

CONCRETING SOUTH ROAD TO HAMILTON DUPLICATION OF RAILWAY (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE. Thursday. Remits carried at the half-yearly conference of the South Auckland Chambers of Commerce were considered by the executive of the five constituent chambers at Pukekohe to-day. There were present: Messrs. A. Willis (Papakura), president, H. Curd (Pukekohe), J. D. Chalmers (Waiuku), J. Woodcock (Pokeno) and S. P. Day, secretary. It was decided to urge the Railway Department to complete the duplication of the railway line to Papakura at an early date. No action was taken in respect of the electrification of the line, it being pointed out that the matter was at present under consideration by the department. The remit pressing for the construction of the Pokeno-Paeroa railway line was adopted. Representations are to be made to the Franklin, Manukau and Raglan County Councils requesting that consideration be given to cases where settlers have no reasonable access to their properties, in view of the fact that the Main Highways Board is now empowered to expend money on subsidiary highways. The executive agreed to urge the Highways Board to grant an increased subsidy in respect of the Great South Road and the Pokeno-Paeroa main highway, and thus relieve the feeder roads. The Railway Department is to be asked to extend facilities in respect of workers’ concession tickets so that they would be operative until 9 a.m. in lieu of 8 a.m. That the Highways Board be requested to expedite the concreting of the Great South Road from Papakura to Hamilton was another remit that was approved. Other remits adopted included the urging of the construction of the Wha-ngarata-Pokeno (new) road, and that the claims of backblock children be met by establishing additional dental clinics. In order to meet the increasing motor transport, the Railway Department is to be recommended to reduce fares and tariffs. Representations are to be made to the Prime Minister advocating that legislation be adopted to have the Highways Board separated from the Public Works Department. A deputation representing the chambers is to meet the Ministers of .Lands and Public Works on their visit to Franklin.
