“EXPENSIVE SCHEME”
CENTRALISING RAILWAY WORKSHOPS ATTACK FROM WANGANUI (Special to THE SG2s) WANGANUI, To-day. "Centralisation gone mad” is how an old railwayman characterises the work of the Coates Government in dealing with railway affairs. "It has left a legacy that is going to cost the country millions of pounds. In tho long run what may be made on tlie merry-go-round is going to bo lost on the swings,’’ he says. Wanganui is losing over 300 families. the majority oi whom had tlieir own homes here, and had to leave them without compensation. Apart from that aspect, vehicles with skidded wheels or scored journals have to be hauled all the way from the Taranaki, Wanganui or Rangitikei districts to Otaliuhu. causing more damage than ever, in addition to weeks of delay in transport before the vehicle can be placed in commission again. Engines and wagons that were repaired at Eastown in a day or two have now to take twice or three times that time in tlie process of transport to Otaliuhu. The position is to be represented to the new Government in the hope that something might be done to prevent further wastage.
