WARM ANKLES

Woollen Socks for Winter Wear LONDON’S LATEST FAD (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.12 p.m. LONDON, Wed. The fashion for women of wearing woollen socks, with gaily striped tops, over ordinary stockings, which began on lawn tennis courts, is now become general for every-day wear. Their comfort, warmth and the protection they give against holes in silk stockings are specially appealing during the present wintry weather, with the result that young women's ankles without this protection are now very exceptional. The latest fashion has created a mild boom in a section of the hosiery trade. At Nottingham many firms are working overtime to cope with the demand. Men are earning £7 a week and girls £3. Whole families at Nottinghamshire colliery villages are living on what their daughters are earning at this trade.
