POUNDED BY SEAS

DUTCH LINER ASHORE COLLISION IN CHANNEL British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Tuesday. Efforts are being made to-day to effect temporary repairs to the Dutch steamer Merauke, 6,674 tons, of the Rotterdam Lloyd Line; which was beached in a sinking condition near Hythe yesterday. The damage to the Merauke was caused by a collision with an unknown steamer during a dense fog which developed in the English Channel yesterday. The Merauke was on the final stages of her journey from the Dutch East Indies to Rotterdam via Liverpool and London. The damage suffered was extensive. When the liner was seen to be going down by the head the Dungeness lifeboat put out, but her services were not needed. Two tugs took the Merauke in tow to Dover Harbour, but the danger that the liner might founder necessitated beaching h4r at high tide. This afternoon the Merauke was awash, with heavy seas breaking over her, and she appears to be in danger of breaking up. The crew have been taken off by a tug from Dover.
