POSITIONS OF HONOUR
HARBOUR CHAIRMEN HIGHER GRANT PROPOSED At present tlie Harbours Act allows a maximum o£ £2OO per annum as the honorarium of the chairman of a harbour board. Delegates to the triennial Harbour Association Conference yesterday passed a resolution asking the Government to permit an increase. “I know our own chairman has spent more on hospitality toward visitors than the £2OO he receives annually,” said Mr. T. B. Clay, Auckland, in moving that the chairman of any board having an annual -revenue exceeding £150,000 may be paid an annual allowance of £4OO. “It is ridiculous to expect a chair man of a large board to carry out his duties on:the present honorarium.” was the view of Mr. J. A. Nash, Foxton. He commended the motion to the sympathy of all delegates, and expressed the view that the present inadequacy should be brought forciblv before the Minister of Marine. That it was an honour to he elected chairman of a harbour baord and that in itself was sufficient remuneration was the opinion of Mr. F. Horrell. Lyttelton. The motion was carried by an overwhelming majority.
