“THE KING’S CHAIN”
OWNERSHIP OF HARBOUR LAND What is the King’s Chain? This was one of the many queer terms heard at yesterday afternoon’s conference of New Zealand harbour boards. A delegate seeking information as to who should be owner of a piece of foreshore that had gradually appeared out of the sea was informed that between high water mark and a landholder’s property a strip of ground a chain wide was vested in the King for roading purposes if required. If the high water mark fell back further from the original foreshore by a change in the topography of a harbour floor, the property-owner may not add the heaven-sent piece to his holding—after allowing for the King’s Chain —for the law provides that the land accretion goes to the local harbour authority.
