ENGINEER DROWNED
TRAGEDY AT RIVERHEAD EMPLOYED ON STEAMER When Captain F. C. Bradney* of the .Bradney and Binns steamer Kaipatiki, failed to hear his engineer getting up steam yesterday morning, .when the vessel was lying at the Riverhead wharf, he went to look for the engineer. He found his bunk had not been slept in, and later found his body floating in the water by the wharf. The engineer was John Wheeler, a married man, aged about 56. He was last seen when Captain Bradney left the steamer at about 9.30 on Tuesday evening, walking about on the wharf, and smoking. When Captain Bradney returned an hour later, he found all except the riding lights in darkness, and thought that Mr. Wheeler had gone to bed. When he awoke, about six o’clock yesterday morning, he could hear no sounds of steam being got up, and went to inquire the reason. The engineer’s bunk had not been slept irf, and there was no sign of him on board. Eater he discovered the body in the water.
