ALFRED O’SHEA

TOWN HALL ON SATURDAY Mr. Alfred O’Shea’s first concert in Auckland will be given in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. His programme will include “Spirits Gentil,” from “Favorita,” (Donizetti); “Passing By” (Purcell), “The Message” (Blumenthal); “Berceuse” from “Jocelyn, with violin obbligato (Godard), “Nocturne” (Michael Head), “Life and Death” (Coleridge-Taylor). For encore and request numbers, Mr. O’Shea will sing old favourites. Following is an extract from the London “Daily Mail’s” critique of an Alfred O’Shea recital at the Queen’s Hall, London: “The young Irish-Australian has a beautiful lyric tenor. Mr. O'Shea’s singing reveals complete mastery over his voice, resulting in artistic shadings and most commendable use of mezzo voice. There are many world-renowned tenors who are unable to control their voices like this young Australian —for instance. France’s greatest tenor, Annseau, who is at present in America, and who roars at the top of his voice. “Another of Mr. O’Shea’s attributes is an excellent pronunciation of both Italian and French, which proves that ho must have worked hard to master so successfully the purity of the open vowels.” In his Auckland concerts. Mr. O’Shea will be assisted by Ina Bosworth, violiniste: Mavis Grevatt, harpiste; and Theo Halpin, solo pianist and accompanist. The box plan is now open at Lewis Eady’s, Ltd. Harold Lloyd has many important scenes completed for his latest production far Paramount, entitled “The Butterfly Chaser.” Work was held up a few weeks ago owing to the comedian breaking one wrist. Some talking sequences are also finished, and will be seen and heard in those New ZeaJand theatres equipped with sound apparatus. Ted Wilde is directing.
