Bather’s Death

DROWNED TRYING TO - WARN OTHERS EXHAUSTED IN SURF Seeing some bathers dangerously far out off the mouth of the Waitakere River yesterday, Herbert John Adams, a single man, aged 29, swam out to warn them. On his way back he became exhausted and was drowned some distance from the beach. Mr. Adams, who lived at 10 Richmond Road, Ponsonby, went to bathe with a party of men and women at about 12.30. He saw some bathers far out beyond the breakers and became alarmed for their safety, so he swam out to warn them to come in. On his way back he made signals of distress and two men went to his rescue. They could not fight their way through the breakers and had to give up the attempt. Late last night his body liad not been discovered, and the search is being continued to-day. Mr. Adams was employed as a driver by Georgs Blockley and Company, manufacturers, and, so far as is known, had no relatives in New Zealand.
