Gale Sweeps Sea for Thousand Miles
FOUR SHIPS IN DISTRESS OTHERS SPEED TO THEIR AID (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and X.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Saturday. Rescue ships and salvage tugs are steaming to-night to aid four vessels which are reported to be disabled in high seas and gales which y Ere sweeping the Atlantic for a 1,000 miles off the American shores. The latest steamer to report itself in distress is the Silverinaple, 780 miles east of Boston. Coastguard cutters are proceeding to her relief. The steam trawler Seiner is believed to have been lost off George's Banks. The steamer Capo Vado, 750 miles east of Bermuda, is being searched for by the Western Knight which answered the Vado’s distress signals. The steamship Fern Lane reported that it had lost its rudder and was helpless 500 miles south-east of Bermuda. A salvage tug is steaming to take her in tow. The Silvei'maple. a British steamer of 5,302 tons, was built in 1927 end is ownfd by the Silver I-ine, Ltd. Her port of registry is London. The trawler Seiner is of 34G tons and is owned by the Portland Trawling Company. Her port of registry is Portland, Maine, and she was built in 1922. The Capo Vado (formerly the Alderney and before that the Dochra) is an Italian vessel displacing 4 r 391 tons and registered at Genoa. She was built in England in 1906. The Fernlane is a Norwegian steamer of 4,310 tons. She was built in 1927, apd is registered and owned at Oslo.
