Takapuna Fixture Opens Auspiciously

TAKANINI STABLE AGAIN IN FORM A FEATURE of Saturday’s racing at Takapuna was the success attending the efforts of representatives from J. Jamieson’s Takanini stable, two winners, one second, and two thirds being the score, illustrating the point that horses from this quarter are once more in winning vein.

Tlio stage was set for the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Saturday in a style that savoured of the meticulous care so very noticeable in meetings over at the Shore, efficient management and the best of racing, with the wellbacked division holding its own; not to mention the glorious summer day, the heat of the sun in a cloudless sky being tempered by a cooling breeze from the. harbour. The rain of the two previous days had put the course in great order, the going being fast. Flying Juliet made a fine showing in the Takapuna Cup, taking charge at the rise of the barrier. and being accompanied by Eager Rose for the greater part of the journey, finally to shake off the Ellerslie representative at the entrance to the j straight and going on to win liand- ; somely from the favourite. Prodice | (bracketed with Desert Glow) and Royal Doulton, both the latter placed horses not enjoying quite so good a run as the winner. who, however, wound up her task brilliantly. Very Promising Considerable interest was taken in the reappearance of The Begum, for she was consistent, but unlucky, last leason, her efforts on the turf resulting in four second placings. Furthermore, she has had the light of publicity focussed upon her as a result of the brilliant performances of her younger brother. Supremacy 7. The Begum fully justified the good things written’ of her in these columns, for she never looked like being beaten in the Trial, and this effort should not be the end of her winning performances. Vallar won the sprint after an interesting set-to with Lady’s Boy, and High Finance simply played with the opposition in the open seven furlongs, her stable mate Ti Tree and the unlucky Jolly Money chasing her to the judge. Speculation was fairly brisk on the totalisator, the sum of £41,704 being handled, against £48,394 on the first day 3 2 months ago, a decrease of £6,690. This is a fax better turnover than that recorded at the spring meeting a couple of months ago. In the absence of Mr. C. O’Connor at Trentham, the starting on Saturday was in the very capable hands of Mr. J. Vincent*, Avhose work at the barrier was faultless. With Mr. W. P. Russell fulfilling his position of judge at Trentham, the handicaps for to-morrow Avere framed by the well-known handicapper, Mr. J. E. Henrys. Notes on the racing, and details of results, follow. Trial Plate The Begum £649, Sir Mond £399. Parfair Amour £287 and Bold Archer £245 were the main fancies for the Trial Stakes. Parfait Amour led out

from Arihana, The Begum, Sir Mond, Otranto, Roman Pearl, Onewhero and Odin, but at the five furlongs the favourite was in front from Bold Archer, Sir Mond, Otranto, Roman Pearl and Standfast. The Begum was first to turn for home, followed by Bold Archer, Prince of Orange, who ran wide, Steadfast, Roman Pearl, Sir Mond and Princess Rain. The favourite was never troubled to win by a length from Sir Mond, who beat Bold Archer by a head for second place. Roman Pearl was fourth, and then came Princess Rain, Prince of Orange, Arihana, Standfast, Odin, Diamond Queen, Otranto and Bonny Day. Orewa High-weight Glena Bay £ 997, was favourite for tlio Orewa High-weight Handicap, but there was good support for Ripon Abbey £568 and Bizarro £545. Ripon Abbey was quickly in the van, and led out of the straight from Alw r ays, Template, Royal Form, Bizarro, Glena Bay, Zircon, Pekatahi and Harbour View 7 , the field being bunched. Ripon AbDey was still showing the way along the back, where the field began to stretch out, Bizarro, Royal Form, Template, Glena Bay and Always being the leader’s nearest attendants. Ripon Abbey was still going nicely at the bend, where he had a slight advantage from Bizarro and Glena Bay (who had put in a good run crossing the top). Always and Template. The leader hung on to win by less than a length from Royal Form, with Glena Bay a neck away third, and Bizarro fourth. Next to finish were Always. Zircon, Template. Harbour View and Pekatahi. Zealandia Handicap The public elected Jolly Money £1,267, favourite for the Zealandia Handicap, with High Finance £92 6. and Macroom £692 next in demand, with Ti Tree, who finished second, at a good price with £327. High Finance began brilliantly from Macroom. Jolly Money, Ti Tree and Master O’Rourke and along the back' the Papakuratrained filly was three lengths clear of her nearest attendant, Macroom, after whom came Jolly Money, Ti Tree, Cynthia N., The Lamb, Master O’Rourke and Hipo. High Finance

held her advantage into the straight, Macroom, Ti Tree, Master O’Rourke, Jolly Money and Hipo being next to turn the corner, but the leader went on to win nicely by a little more than a length from her stablemate, Ti Tree, who beat the favourite by a neck for second money. Macroom was fourth, follOAved by Master O’Rourke, Hipo, The Lamb. Lunette, Cynthia N., and Scat. Takapuna Cup Most support AA-as forthcoming for the Prodice-Desert Gloaa 7 bracket in the Takapuna Cup, the combination carrying £*1.790, but Transformer £1,449 was also well fancied. The Lover Avas next choice with £978, and F’lying Juliet, who won from end to end, was entrusted with £630. Flying Juliet Avas first out, folloAved by Eager Rose. Prodice and Hyde Park, and the quartette formed the leading division passing the stand, Avith The Lover, Royal Doulton. Desert Glow, Transformer and Thursby next. Along the back Flying Juliet was half a length in front of Eager Rose, with Prodice a length and a-half away, followed by Hyde Park, Desert Glow, The Lover, Royal Doulton, Transformer and Thursby. Flying Juliet and Eager Rose were on terms at: the home turn, Prodice and Royal Doulton being at the head of Transformer, Hyde Park, Desert Glow and The Lover. In a good finish the leader hung on well to get the verdict by a length from Prodice, avlio was three parts of a length in front of Royal Doulton, -with Eager Rose close up fourth. Next in order Avere The Lover, Hyde Park. Transformer, Desert Glow and Thursby. Ferry Handicap British King £1,253 was a sound first choice in the Ferry Handicap, and then came Mussie £7BO and OAvairaka £738, while the eventual winner, Glenstar, carried £504. The fractiousness of Cybele and then Hone Heke delayed the start, and the field was eventually dispatched Avithout the former, Avhile the latter A\ 7 as first out, folloAved by Glenstar, Mussie, Quinsilia, OAvairaka, Palmares, British King and Te Money. Down the back Glenstar collared the lead from Hone Heke, with Mussie, British King, Owairaka, Quinsilia, Justify, Palmares and Te Money next in order. The latter made a dash crossing the top, and was just behind

the leader, Glenstar. at the home turn, being folloAved by British King, Mussie, Hone Heke, Quinsilia, Owairaka and Palmares. Te Money challenged strongly in the run to the judge, but Glenstar hung on to win by a head, with the fast-finishing Palmares half a length away third. Then came Mussie, Quinsilia, British King, Gay Cockade, High Tide and Hone Heke. Calliope Handicap Polyxena £1,882 was a warm favourite in the ttvo-year-old event, the Calliope Handicap, there being a good drop to the next fancy, Gemlight £653, While Royal Finance Avas next choice with £5Ol. The favourite was first out, and made play from Pellette, Fraser, Cymon, Gemlight, Tasty, Currajong and Carl Idem. Polyxena held command into the straight, followed by Pellette, Gemlight, Fraser, Royal Finance, Tasty and Bennie. Inside the distance Royal Finance challenged the favourite, hut the Papakura- owned filly lasted long enough to score by a neck, with Tasty two and a-half lengths away third. Then came Carl Idem, Gemlight, Bennie, Trig, Pellette Cymon, Fairy Belle, Fraser and Currajong. Hauraki Hack Tidal, £1,426, was in strong demand for the Hauraki Hack Handicap, with good support for Star Comet, £925, and Arikitoa, £BBI, while Brampton, who finished second, carried £459. Salamander was the early leader from Arikitoa, Mon Star, Exalted, War Officer, and Brampton, this being the order going out of the straight, with the favourite last. Along the back Salamander Avas clear of Arikitoa and Exalted, and Brampton, with Tidal, who put in a good run at the head of the next division, whicn included Star Comet and Mon Star, War Officer haying dropped back last. The latter moved up again crossing the top, and entered the straight behind Tidal. Brampton, and Arikitoa, being folloAved by Exalted and Star Comet. Brampton mad© an effort to overhaul the favourite, but the top-weight carried too many guns, and Avon by half a length, with Star Comet a length and a half back in third pla.ee. Then folloAved Arikitoa, Exalted. War Officer, Mon Star, and Salamander. . Stewards’ Handicap Vallar, £2,396, and Lady’s Boy, £1,571, yvere favourites for the Stewards' Handicap and they fought out the finish after being in the van practically all the way, the former winning by a length. Lorient 11. came Avith a good run in the straight to cut Melissa, who was well placed throughout, out of third money, AA'ith Melissa, Appellant and Ruffles doing best of the remainder. SUBDIVISION’S FINAL TRY-OUT A FTER the noise and shouting had died down following on the last race at Takapuna on Saturday, Subdivision, with A. Driscoll in the saddle, was stepped on to the oourse proper to have his final I try-out for the Wynyard Plate, to I be run to-morrow. Looking as fit as the proverbial fiddle, Subdivision hopped off slowly from the six furlong peg, well out from the rails, and quickly getting into his stride ran the first two furlongs in a slick 23 4-5, and got to the end of his six furlongs in 1.16 1-5, the last halfmile occupying 52 2-5. Subdivision appeared to be only cantering at the finish, so that it was an’ impressive work-out, and further bears out the contention that he and Gold Money will fight out the decision in to-morrow's big hack contest. Driscoll rode Subdivision in his trial at something a little less than 9.0. CALLIOPE HANDICAP Of £425; 5 fui*. 1— POLYXENA (J. T. Jamieson), ch f, by Chief Ruler —Podokes, 2yrs, 7.9, H.
