ROI L’OR PROYES A REAL PACER
DUNEDIN, To-day. The Metropolitan Handicap furnished one of the finest contests of light harness racing that could be wished for, while the finish was the most thrilling seen at Dunedin for many a day. Backed down to less than an even money favourite, Roi L’Or scored only a head victory from Harvest Child, who had a bare margin from Jean McElwyn. Though the field was in perfect order when the barriers were released, Real Light. Event and Firelight spoilt their chances by going to a break. When the field had settled Down. Jean McElwyn and Desert Star were together in the lead, with Harvest Child. Pluto, Talent, Glide Away, Roi L’Or racing fn that order. Going to the first two furlongs disc, Roi L/Or Avas driven to gain fourth position.
Going along the back Jean McElwyn and Desert Star were still on terms in front, with Harvest Child just in behind them on the rails, and Roi L’Or doing his work on the outside of Harvest Child, and following them closely were Pluto, Talent, Author Jinks and Firelight, and in this order they raced to the mile in 2.20. There was no material change as the fieki got down to the mile and ahalf station in 3.28 3-5. Passing the mile and five furlongs post, Desert Star dropped back and Roi L’Or went up to join Jean McElwyn, with Harvest Child. Pluto, Author Jinks and Talent still in the picture. Turning for home Roi L’Or put in a skip and dropped back a length. Once straight- i ened for home, Jean McElwyn and Harvest Child offered a stout resistance to Roi L’Or, who finished in real style and Avon by a head. Tn his last fiA 7 e starts Roi L’Or has four firsts and one second to his credit. He is a high-class five-year-old by Rey de Oro from Gold Queen, and is destined to qualify for select honours. He is owned by P. Brown, of Kurow. and Avas splendidly handled by D. Withers.
