“SERPENT OF DISCONTENT”
LADY HOUSTON ON TRADES UNIONISM (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Thursday. Lady Houston says she has received hundreds of letters from miners and their wives congratulating her on her New Year message to the miners. Lady Houston says: “This is what taught me. Not long ago mining was very prosperous / and the miners earned good wages and were contented and happy. But the serpent of discontent, called Trades Unionism, crept into the pleasance. He declared: ‘This will never do. .1 am Trades Unionism, my name is ruin.' “So lie ruined the masters, the mines and the miners. His followers clapped ther hands and said, ‘Great is Trades Unionism.’ They came and ate out of his hands. “He preened his tail. winked his eye and said, ‘That’s the stuff to give them. You have ruined the masters, the mines and the miners; but that is not enough. You must be more miserable before you can be truly happy. Therefore you must vote for the Socialists at the coming election.’ ”
