RAILWAY TRAFFIC
‘ J DECREASE IN LIVE STOCK SEASON LATER THIS YEAR Livestock traffic on the railways has shown a substantial decrease during the past month. This remark was contained in a statement made this morning by Air. H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways, on his arrival from "Wellington. Air. Sterling said that the goods traffic was holding very well, with the exception of the live stock. Inquiries liv had made from the Meat Hoard elicited the information that this was due solely to the later season this year. However, when the final figures for the year were written up. Mr. sterling confidently expects to see u substantial increase in this branch of traffic. There had been a substantial and gratifying increase in long:-distance passenger traffic during the Christmas holidays, said Mr. Sterling. The wet weather had reduced the short-distance passenger traffic to smaller dimensions, and this also would have an affect on the linal results. “We are in the happy position of being able to record that, during the heavy Christmas holiday traffic, there was not one serious accident or acci- j dent of any kind due to the railways,” | said Mr. Sterling.
