THRIFTY ENGLISH

£700,000,000 IN SAVINGS British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Wednesday. A steady increase in national thrift is shown by figures just issued by the National Savings Committee. Large sales of national savings certificates were a feature of the year 1928. Notwithstanding the adverse conditions in trades in many regions more than 52,000,000 certificates were sold in the year—an increase cf 16 per cent, upon 1927, and higher than sales for any year since 1923. At the end of 1928 the total number of certificates sold since their introduction in 1916 was more than 890,000,000. This represents a cash investment of nearly £700,000,000. It is estimated that, including accrued interest, the amount due to holders of certificates at the end of the year was about £485,000,000.
