AN ACTRESS OF PROMISE

ROWENA RONALD, the beautiful titian-haired Sydney girl with the Vanbrugh-Boucicault Company, now at His Majesty’s Theatre. Miss Ronald first came into prominence by winning a beauty competition, which brought her into the chorus of musical comedy. For four or five years she graced the chorus, and, when • “Madame Pompadour” was produced, was made understudy to the star, Beppi? de ries. In this production, Powen- got the first chance of showin,’ her ability, for Miss de Vries became ill, and Rowena took her place for several performances, playing Pompadour with remarkable skill and charm. She then appeared in a lesser role in “The Girl' Friend.” In Melbourne Miss Ronald played in “Hit the Deck.” and stepped from that show into the Vanbrugh - Boucicault Company. Dion Boucicault tried her in a small part and discovered in her an aptitude for straight comedy.
