WIDER TRAMS PROBABLE
MORE COMFORT FOR PASSENGERS PREPARATIONS UNDER WAY For some time the Auckland tramways have been undergoing preparation for the ultimate widening of the tramcars by six inches, giving them a much greater measure of comfort. This important piece of information was conveyed by the chairman. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, to the Transport Board last evening, during a discussion on the removal of the 325 centrepoles still remaining in the streets. Mr. Allum said the new work on tracks for a considerable period bad been done to allow of wider trams, and one of the few remaining obstacles was the number of centre-poles, which would cost some £20,500 to remove. Mr. A. J. Entrican: Leave the poles there. I think they serve a useful purpose in dividing traffic, and if they were not there for the motorists to collide with the motorists would be driving through someone’s window. Mr. J Wood remarked on the timeclock pole on Great South Road, and said a number of motorists had complained, and asked if it could be removed. Mr. Allum said the time-clocks had been placed on the sides of the roads, but bitter complaints had come from the drivers, and when one of them finally was killed they had been replaced on centre-poles. Mx*. Wood remarked that the light cn the poles resembled that of a motorcar. Mr. Entrican: Some of them see two lights. The board displayed little further interest in the removal of the centrepoles when told that there was a possibility of permission being granted to use wider tramcars, tlie poles being allowed to remain until finances nre in a better state.
