SHORTAGE OF TELEPHONES

MOUNT ROSKILLS DIFFICULTY In reply to a request of the Mount Roskill Road Board for a telephone to the turncock’s house, to obviate loss of time in supplying: increased water pressure for suppressing fires, the telegraph engineer has notified the board that it is impossible to supply the connection. His letter, which was read at the board’s meeting last evening, explained that the exchange apparatus was in full use, and not a spare number was available. As the blockage was in the exchange itself, the condition mentioned applied to the whole area served by the Mount Eden exchange. No date was given when an improved outlook may be expected. The chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, contended that the question was one of urgency. The board had recently suffered a loss of approximately £IOO worth of water at a recent fire in the district, all for the want of a telephone at the turncock’s house. He suggested that a further request be made to the telegraph engineer, but on the motion of Mr. G. E. Tansley it was decided refer the question to the member for the district, Mr. G. C. Munns, M.P.
