SPECTACULAR FIRE AT WELLINGTON WATER HAS LITTLE EFFECT Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day, A disastrous fire broke out shortly after midnight in the central block in Victoria Street midway between Willeston and Hunter Streets. The outbreak began in Kodak House, a six-storey building, in which much inflammable material was stocked. The fire was first seen in the top Storey among photographic supplies, which were responsible for the startling rapidity with which the flames spread throughout the top floor. The fire brigade was quickly in attendance, and all the city’s fire-fight-ing plant was speedily in use. A ladder was run up to the top of the building, but in spite of the bravery of the fireman, who stood at a precarious altitude, all the water poured on the flames seemed to have little effect, and a wonderful fireworks display was provided for the thousands of spectators. Fortunately the building was bounded by other brick structures and, through great perseverance, the brigade managed to keep the flames from spreading. By 2.15 a.m. the outbreak was well under control.
