ISSBST' ♦ *IF MR. ELIAS DUNNING F

The death occurred at a private, hospital in Hamilton yesterday of Mr. Elias Dunning, farmer, of Hautapu, aged 36 years. He was tho son of Mr. and Mrs. James Dunning, of Pukeroro, and went to Cambridge from Ayrshire, Scotland, about seven years ago. He had been farming there since. He married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. P. M. Duncan, of that district, and is survived by liis widotv and two little children. The late Mr. Dunning had a very fine war record. At the outbreak of the Great AVar lie volunteered, and was a member of the Ayrshire Yeomanry. He saw service at Gallipo’i. and at Egypt. After returning to England he returned to France as a commissioned officer. He gained the Military Cross for leading a bombing party and clearing the enemy out of a trench on a threatened flank.

mr. james d. McKenzie

The death occurred at Whanearei yesterday of Mr. James D. McKenzie, well-known in the North for his expert work on local bodies. Mr. McKenzie was born at Cape Breton and came out to New Zealand in 1858. living continuously .in the North Island ever since.

For several years he was a prospector in the Hauraki*Peninsula, but finding that the work did not pay he went to Hawkes Bay. where he was engaged in bridge-building for some time. In 1879 he moved to .tVhangarei, wlvere he joined his father and brothers in the leather-making industry. After a few years he sold out of the leather business and went on the land, taking a holding neai WhangareL Since then he has been a farmer. Mr. McKenzie always took a keen Interest in local and general politics. In 1893 he became a member of the Whangarei County Council and was e’ceted that body's delegate to the first Local Bodies’ Conference in Auckland. Since then he has been a member of numerous boards ot all —education boards. hospital boards and charitable aid boards. He was noted for having command of all the details of administration in North Auckland.
