WEBSTER'S FAST TIME

POPULAR HARBOUR SWIM WAIWAI SHIELD TO RAPER Fastest time in the three-quarter mile harbour race for the Waiwai Shield on Saturday afternoon went to Ronald Webster, of the Ponsonby Club. A. W. Raper, another Fonsonby member,- won the shield off the 2m 30s mark, and yet another Fonsonby success was achieved when W. .1. Stevens gained second fastest time. Eighteen started from the Western Wharf on the distance to Shelly Beach bath under ideal conditions. A fleet of small craft followed the competitors. Competition was strenuous the whole way and by the time half the course had been covered the backmarkers were drawing close to the limit men. The last quarter of a mile saw an interesting race. Raper kept out in front and led Webster across the line by 25 yards. D. Hyauiason, the Grammar entrant, was further out in the current than Webster at the finish and was beaten by nothing more than a yard for second place. Before a large attendance after the race at Shelly Beach, Raper was presented with the shield by Mr. R. A. Cowley, an official of the Fonsonby Club, which conducted the race. The starter was Mr. L. Brighton, and the handicapper. Mr. W. Stevens.

The Waiwai Shield has been raced for since 1910. and, until the introduction of the Molloy Cup about six years ago. was used for a cross-

harbour ace. The winner of the last race was R. E. Baird. Details: — . A. W. RAPER (Ponsonby). 2m 30s handicap, 21m 52s gross time .... 1 R. .7. WEBSTER (Ponsonby), scr., 22m 14s gross time 2 D.
