Bremner’s Generalship

West End Gains Brilliant Win In N.Z. Bowling Championships

RINKS / I ILE COMES TO A UCKLAND

(Special to THE SC'H) WELLINGTON, Suudav. ON top of Archie Coltman's brilliant win in the singles championship Auckland had another outstanding sue ,-ess at the New Zealand bowling tournament on Saturdav " hen 1 Bremner s West End rink scored a magnificent win in the doubles final. Two Christchurch men, Laurenson and Kinvig, non the pairs, after a great tussle with a South Canterbury pair.

The rinks final resulted in a win for greinner (West End) from Doherty (Kelburn), 22—10, after a game with plenty of incident. Bremner got a single on the first, after Clark trailed the ditch when 3 down. Kelburn lay four on the second head, and Clark’s first bowl drew the shot, but Routley drew a beauty, and Bremner drove, taking the white to the ditch and lay two, Doherty failing to save. DOHERTY GETS A SEVEN On the third, Kelburn outplayed the opposition and left a bad position for Bremner, live down, who was thin. With his saving shot Doherty added two more, and Bremner in trying to .cave, tangled on a wide bowl and Doherty’s team got a great seven, an extraordinary happening in a rinks final. On the fourth head the leads drew wide, and again Kelburn lay two. Clark then drew' a beauty and lay one. Bremner played for safety and Doherty was wide and heavy. On the fifth Needham drew on the jack and Clark scored a counter with his first, and drew another, Routley failing and Doherty went through to the ditch. West End two up, and the score 6 —7 against Bremner. The sixth brought a single to West End, after laying a good three, which Routley (third for Doherty) spoiled by taking two shots off, and the score was seven all. WEST END GOES AHEAD The seventh head was a good one for West End. Hardley and Needham. playing nicely, lay three. Clark consolidated, and on the change-over Doherty was down four. Bremner played for position at the back with his first and then drew another, Doherty just failing to save. Five to West End, which led 12—7. The eighth end brought a single to Bremner after an open head, and the ninth a good three, after Routley had taken kitty right to the peg on the boundary, and Bremner lay one. The West End skip drew two more, Doherty losing both his bowls in the ditch. The score was now 16 —7, Doherty scoring only on one head out of eight, while the West Enders had run up 1,2, 1,2, 1,5, 1 and 3.

( Hataitui) finished on the 20th end, when Laurenson won, 2S —14. The other semi-final resulted: Pierce and Edwards (Temuka), 23, v. Doherty and Routley (Kelburn), 15. In the final Kinvig and Laurenson (Linwood) defeated Pierce and Edwards (Temuka), 22 —21.

The tenth saw a single to Kelburn, after a rather scattered end. Misty conditions now prevailed, but the green was not affected. On the 11th, Bremner got a single, Clark drawing in a good one to save the position, and the 12th saw a single to Kelburn, Routley being on the jack, and the score was 17 —9, Doherty’s men being eight dwn.

The 13th head was all ifi Bremner’a favour, Needham and Hadley playing well, and West End looked like getting four when Doherty saved two shots with his first, and with his next drew the shot. Bremner then faced him out, and a two went to West End, and the leaders were 10 up. On the 14th, Petrie drew right on the jack, and Howat shouldered in for the second, but Clark took the white away, ran to Needham’s bowl, and West End got two. Bremner ran through, but Doherty drew the shot, Bremner just failing to beat it. Doherty tried to face Bremner’s nearest out for four, and only just failed. Kelburn one tip on the head. BREMNER’S SOUND WORK

The next two ends saw singles to Kelburn, and the score on the 16th was 19 —12. Play now became interesting. though Bremner was perhaps the sounder of the two skips, his placing of the head being superior to that of his opponent.

The 17th was very open, anti nothing was near until Clark drew the shot, and it stayed there. One to West End, and the score 20 —12. The 18th was a long head, and Hardley scored a toucher, but Howat lay the shot, and Routley got another, and they stayed there. Bremner tipping the jack, hut not saving. Score. 20—14. Kelburn was now six down, with three heads to go, and the odds were on West End. BREMNER BURNS THE HEAD At the 19 th Doherty had to score or his chances were gone. Routley got a shot dn rather a wide end,but Clark faced but. and lay himself, and next drew another. Doherty missed his run. Bremner got position and then Doherty sent down a beauty, drawing right to the jack, and Kelburn got oneL West End was five up and two to play. The 20th was a long head, and rather wide, the leads and seconds having lost the green during the last few ends, dark’s first was a shot 2ft away, but Routley faced him °ut. Then Doherty pushed West End s nearest bowl back for three or four shots. Bremner drove and burned with an accurate drive. On the replay •'’lark lay one, and his second counted. Doherty tried to trail but missed by a fraction, and Bremner, drawing one with his last, and Doherty failing to burn. West End got a pair, making the score 22—[-15. Wide and Bremner mixing the bowl well, thus obviating a possible pot. chslracterised the last which West End won, Needham’s shot bowl being undisturbed, and the game, which was a really interesting one. ended 22—16.! v Bremner wks very sound, and when wanted was! always there. Clark played really! well. He came to hght several times when the position looked bad. Bremner displayed great genenilship. his heads being well mixed, rlis win was well received.

LINWOOD MEN’S WIN (Special to TtlE SUN) WELLINGTON, Sunday. The final of the doubles was between Edwards and Pierce (Temuka) and Laurenson and Kinvig (Linwood). The latter player got going early, and with a single and two pairs, was leading s—l5 —1 on the fourth green. Then he landed a four and a three on the next two ends, and the score was 12—1 on the sixth. The Temuka players up to this stage were outclassed. Going on well Laurenson was 19 —6 on the 12th. Then Pierce, Edwards’s lead, who up to this stage had been outplayed by Kinvig, the opposing lead, commenced to play in earnest. Edwards got a pair and a four, and on the 14tli the score was 19 —12. Edwards was a great fighter, and scored on the next a single, making the score 19—13. Then he lay three good ones in the 16th, and Laurenson’s last, a drive, cannoned into the front wood, and going on, pushed out all three lying shots, and he scored one from the end, making the score 20 —13, to Laurenson. On the next two ends a single on each end went to Temuka, the last one being a fine effort, Edwards drawing a perfect shot and saving a sure three down. TEMUKA’S GREAT FIGHT The next end, the 19th, saw Edwards at his best, the Temuka player landing a great six, all drawn, Laurenson shaking the white on two occasions. Edwards was now one up, the score being 21 —20. It was the first time he had headed his opponent in the game. Laurenson got the next head by a single, after a close finish. The game was 21 all and one to go and excitement ran high. Pierce, the Temuka lead, was on the jack with the first, but Kinvig beat him for the shot with a daisy, and this shot stayed there, both Edwards and Laurenson failing to fit the head, and Laurenson and Kinvig got one from the end and won the championship doubles for 1929, 22—21.
