FISHERMEN RAIDED
PIRATES OF THE SMALL CRAFT MOVE FOR PROTECTION Protection from the depreciations of thieves who raid the boats moored by the Nelson Street Wharf is required by the seine net and line fishermen of Auckland. The Seine Net and Line Association called a meeting of protest on Saturday and a-large attendance of members decided to bring the grievance before the Harbour Board, with the object of getting the police watchman to protect their property. Boats and gear near the wharf are worth about £20,000, and at night they are unprotected. Valuable gear has been cut and slashed and supplies, lubricating oil and small articles have been stolen. There is also the danger of fire, vagrants often being discovered sleeping on the boats. One launch was set on fire by a vagrant droppinng a cigarette butt on the sail. It was suggested that some card system might be agreed on to detect the trespassers, this being a difficulty at present, as some men had permission to sleep on the boats.
