KAWAU, NAVAL BASE
HOLIDAY FOR THE SHIPS BREAK IN FIRING PRACTICE Kawau, the lovely island of the Hauraki, took on the appearance of a naval base during the wek-end, the ships of the New Zealand Naval Division putting in there on Friday evening after a week’s firing practice in the Gulf. Shore leave was granted the crews on Saturday, and officers and men played tennis, swam, danced and mixed with the crowd of summer visitors, giving the island as gay an appearance as it has ever had. Yesterday the Rangitoto carired nearly 1,000 excursionists down there, and the gardens were bright with summer frocks and sunshades when the bands of the Dunedin and Diomede gave a concert under the conductorship of Bandmaster Fitch. On Saturday afternoon a team of officers challenged the guests of the Mansion House to a tennis match, and the Navy won the rubber. In the evening a dance was held in the ballroom of the house, the music being played by the ships’ jazz band. The ships were thrown open to inspection in the afternoon. At daybreak to-day the ships left for the Gulf again to continue thenpractice.
