Day had scarcely dawned when the sky grew black as night again, and there was • a heavy downfall of snowflakes, which were whipped by a sudden wind into whirling clouds. Vehicles were brought almost to a standstill and pedestrians, unable to struggle against the blizzard, had to take shelter. The storm lasted only half an but it left the streets covered with a thick layer of snow and created great disorganisation in the traffic. The eastern half of England generally experienced a snowstorm about the same time.
