BIRKENHEAD HIGHWAYS
NEW WORK IN CONCRETE With the permission of the Main Highways Board, the Birkenhead Borough Council intends to construct in concrete five chains of Onewa Road from the Waitemata County, instead of in bitumen. The council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skea'tes. presiding. The work would receive a subsidy of £2 for £l. The estimate for Hauraki Street and Glenfield Road was £l,Oll, the subsidy being £674. Onewa Road, estimate £172 and subsidy £ll4 13s 4d. As the County Council has just let a contract for its portion at the boundary in Onewa Road to be done in concrete, it was decided to ask the Highways Council to approve of the councils portion being done by the same contractor, instead of doing it in bitumin, the estimated cost in concrete being £554 10s, which would carry a £1 for £1 subsidy amounting to £277 ss. It was decided to make to take the corner at Pupuke Road and Glenfield Road under the Public Works Act, the corner being considered dangerous to motorists. In Cr. Campbell’s absence, Cr. Hadfield moved his notice of motion: “That this council ask for the co-operation of the Northcote Borough Council in conference, with a view to taking steps to bring about the adoption of the automatic telephone system for the district without further delay. Mr. H. B. Burnett, secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board, wrote that the board has agreed to grant permission for the erection of dressing-sheds on the waterfront reserve on condition that the plans of the proposed buildings are submitted for approval, that the tenancy be terminable by six months notice. The Mayor explained that owing to the letter coming late, the sheds had been erected on skids nearer to the cliff for the convenience of the public over the holidays. •Dhe council, after its ordinary meetingheld a meeting as the Domain Board. Mr. O. Handlon was re-elected caretaker of the Kauri Point Domain. The caretaker reported that Fitzpatrick Bay and Onetangi were very popular now especially with the Auckland public, but the lack of conveniences and bathing sheds was a drawback. He said he could never get anything done by the previous domain board as they very seldom had a meeting. After discussion it was left to the Parks Committee to view the domain in company with the caretaker, and report to the board.
