SYDNEY POTATOES DEAR

EMBARGO AGAINST N.Z. REMOVAL KEENLY SOUGHT (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY, Wednesday. A cabled message has been published in Sydney containing information from Auckland to the effect that there is a glut of potatoes, which are on offer at £8 to £8 10s in the Dominion while consumers here are paying upwards of sixpence per lb. retail. The message has aroused unusual interest. The embargo against New Zealand potatoes, which has been in existence since February, 1927, enables Tasmanian and Victorian growers to reap exceptionally high prices in Sydney. The consumers here are naturally anxious that the embargo should be lifted, even if only temporarily. The Agricultural Department at Sydney states that the matter is entirely one for the Commonwealth. If the New South Wales potato crop should be a complete failure owing to the absence of rain, which seems highly likely, the prices of local potatoes will go still higher.
