OUTSTAYED WELCOME
TWO CHINESE FINED £45 ONE A VICTIM OF PIRATES Two Chinese who had stayed in New Zealand longer than the terms of their temporary immigration permits allowed, were fined a total of £45 at the Police Court this morning. Fong Seong, alias Ah How, a gardener aged 22, admitted that he had overstayed his time by nine months, and was lined £ 20. Wong Quay, a laundry man aged 24, pleaded gLiilty to being 15 months over his time and was fined £25. Default was fixed at two months in each case and deportation orders were made. CAPTURED BY PIRATES Though Fong Seong had nothing to say this morning, he is said by his countrymen to be the victim of unfortunate circumstances. A year or two ago, when in China, he was captured by Cantonese pirates, who held him to ransom for a sum equivalent to £2OO. Seong’s father, a merchant of Canton, paid for his son’s release, and the young man came out to the Dominion. He received news that his father’s premises at home had been burned clown, and the family was in difficulties. He is then said to have sent all his money home, with the result that he could find no funds with which to p&y his fare back to China when the time came.
